Injured Cormorant pecks at Emergency Room Door
A cormorant with a fishhook in his beak made its presence known at the emergency room of a hospital:
The wild bird pecked at the glass of the entrance door, the fire department reported.
They were alerted in the afternoon by staff of the
"Klinikum Links der Weser"
in Bremen.
The cormorant stood in front of the emergency room on Sunday.
Firefighters then went to the hospital.
"In a fantastic collaboration between the professional fire brigade and the emergency room medical staff, the fishhook was removed and the wound was treated as best as possible,"
the statement continued.
Fishing Hook in the Beak is very dangerous
A cormorant is a large, glossy black water bird with a long neck, a wedge-shaped head and a distinctive sharp beak with a hooked tip. The fire department writes that the birds are actually quite shy, and:
"A fishhook in a bird's beak is extremely dangerous for the animal – infections, pain, even starvation would be possible."
After the treatment, the bird was released back into the wild in the hospital's park.
The cormorant had a dangerous fishing hook in his beak.
Firefighters with the cormorant on his way back to the wild.
Injured Cormorant probably didn't actively seek Help
The bird with a fishhook in his beak most likely ended up at the clinic by chance,
Lovely Cormorant story!
I once had a seagull come to my door with the same problem. It was tangled up in the fishing line and could hardly walk let alone fly. My neighbour and I cut it free and managed to get the hook out. It was exhausted and spent the rest of the day under a tree in my place being fed soft cat food and water until it felt strong enough to fly away. I never saw it again.
Great rescue operation!
We both know that neither seagulls nor cormorants need saving, given their large numbers worldwide.
But then there are these moments in life when you simply can't look away. Some call it karma, others coincidence, or even the (albeit small) possibility that the cormorant or seagull was specifically asking for help. Either way,
your
seagull was a lucky seagull, as
your
doves are. ️️️
The bird with a fishhook in his beak most likely ended up at the clinic by chance,
Thomas Brandt, chairman of the Lower Saxony Ornithological Association, told the German Press Agency.
Such cognitive abilities, he said, are reserved for very few species.
The cormorant, now free of hooks.
