It’s unnatural. You’re not necessarily happy when you smile for pictures. It’s dishonest and perverts the truth of the memory.
In the wild, animals bare their teeth when they want to kill something. In modern America, less sophisticated animals bare their teeth in edited selfies for social media. Which is more meaningless?
Ultimately, It’s ****ing bizarre. A uniquely human practice. Actually it’s a recent practice, as prior to the photograph, everyone looked appropriately grim and serious in paintings.
Stop.

What if it is? Is my point.
Are you constantly smiling while with family? Never stopping? That’s off, man. Not normal.
The act of smiling for photos Is intended to artificially color the mood of the memory. It’s fake. It’s weird.
Once knew a guy who had something wrong, some condition. He couldn’t talk, he could only smile. Nice guy. Actually idk if he was nice. I don’t know whether the condition made him smile or if it was the only mode of communication available to him because he couldn’t talk. He could only smile.
You are not subject to such constraints. There is no equivocating or speculating as to your intentions when you put up a big goofy grin on family photos. You are lying in a vain attempt at projecting a happier mood than family time at the turkey table warrants.
Remember me when dad backhands uncle Larry for being a shameless Biden shill this Thursday. Then try smiling for the camera.
Stop.

"It’s unnatural.'"
——————————————–
I disagree, I think it really depends on when, where, and what is happening at the time the Photo is being taken.
What if it's a Photo of 1 person or several people smiling at some sort of a party, event, vacation, or a family reunion ?

It depends.
Maybe some or most of those who smile in photos really are happy outgoing social butterflies.
And there are happy occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or a new store opening where a smile is natural.
The only group of a majority that I can think of now that do not smile are musicians or singers in their publicity photos and album covers.
The Hairy Armpits are really, really excited for their very first CD release, "No Razor," and would really, really love to see you at Club Dread this weekend where they will be very happy to perform!
A smile in a selfie is weird unless you are genuinely smiling so seeing as you are so happy when you are on your own and therefore your smile is natural then I’m sure it looks completely fine. And not weird in any way. Or creepy at all.

Wait wait wait. It’s okay to smile if other people are involved but if you’re alone, don’t smile?!
What? Why?
This is even more twisted, Doodles. I love being alone. When I’m alone, I am always smiling. I never stop. This is why I only smile in selfies and never with other people. It’s more honest that way. More in line with what God intended.

Agreed for when it's a selfie or something but if you are posing with friends or messing around on a night out then a smile is ok. A few years ago my ex said his mother was coming over and that she wanted to take our photo to add to her collection of family pictures and I was so uncomfortable and had a massive tantrum before she got there because I hated the idea of standing there and posing with a totally fake smile for this woman I had only met a couple of times. I found it weird. If I had a smile in that photo then I guarantee it was as fake as hell.

People's teeth are pretty now and they want to show them off. How white they are, symmetrical, alignment ratio of bicuspids and molas to mouth opening, all play a role.
When you don't smile in photographs, it indicates to others you have bad teeth.
No one with great teeth doesn't not smile nor makes any excuses not to smile. Only people with bad teeth do that.
Just get your teeth fixed if you're that insecure. This is what teeth are supposed to look like when you smile. These are 2 of my friends:

Right.
Nature agrees with us. “It wasn’t practical” to smile for long, right? Nobody does that. The act of smiling for pictures corrupts the memory. You are not actually smiling like a doofus the entire time during whatever event you’re at. If you were, nobody would talk to you and everyone would hate you.

I thought I was the only one. But I’ve always felt ridiculous putting on a cheesy, fake, smile, for photos.
Actually it’s a recent practice, as prior to the photograph, everyone looked appropriately grim and serious in paintings.
You’re right. It’s only a relatively recent trend in photography. Up until about the turn of the 20th century, exposure times were slow, so it wasn’t practical to pose with a smile for 5 or 10+ minutes or so. That, and a family photograph was considered a serious affair, so no one thought to smile. It was also expensive. So unfortunately, many photographs during the Victorian era, were
“Victorian Memento Mori”
(Depending on how easily you’re creeped out, you might not want to look that up)
