If being attractive was an evolutionary advantage, then we would all be attractive. Instead, we see the opposite is the case. Nearly everyone is ugly. The genes behind being ugly have proven more successful in the gene pool. Ugly is actually attractive.

Except we know that our biology drives us to want to procreate with
Traditionally “attractive” people. So while I see your logic, we know that our system, created by evolution, values attractiveness above ugliness.
At issue is scarcity. Genes that make a person attractive in the right ways are relatively scarce. Geographic biases limit partner selection to a relatively small pool of viable mates, many of whom are probably not attractive. Geography therefore dictates the size of the population you can mate with; you select the most attractive constituents in this geographically limited group of mates.
Stop.

Speaking from experience, I'm not sure you're correct about ugly being attractive. I have found that my vast intellect and finely honed sense of humor are what attract people to me.
I may create an AMA thread in that regard some day – I'm ugly as hell, AMA.

Also, no matter how beautiful you are when you're young, you're going to get old and ugly one day, if you live long enough. Therefore, it's better to start out ugly and not have to go through the pain and sadness of losing your good looks.
