Suppose it is 3rd and 15 and the offense is out of FG range.
Instead of a pass the QB will hand it off where the RB has zero chance to get first down but might make a few yards before giving the ball back to the other team.
Why not pass it?
That will give them a better chance at the first down and they have nothing left to lose at that point.
Even if the ball is incomplete, the punter can still kick the ball way down there.
Not like as if those extra five yards is really going to make that much of a difference. Will it?

Pass could be incomplete - or worse, intercepted, possibly run back for a pick-6. A ground play is the less risky approach. Usually it ensures them at least a few yards gained, giving the punter a little less field to have to cover when he punts it. And you never know: I've seen some of those running plays on 3rd down situations yield spectacular results - even TD's. Of course, when it's late in the game and the offensive team really needs to hurry up and get points on the board, they will opt for the riskier strategy and attempt a third-and-long pass.

Is it creative to have an uncreative signature such as this one?
Signature replies correctly.

The only time that would make sense is if it's near the end of the game and they are trying to run out as much clock as possible.
