It will be close, but he is on pace now.
Gretzky has 894 goals. Ovechkin has 684 goals currently. He's only 34. If he plays 6 more seasons, until 40, and scores an average of at least 35 goals each season that puts him at 894.
Some of those may be 40, 45, 50 goal seasons on top of that.
He's already all but guaranteed for the number 2 spot; he only needs 115 more goals to do that.
He was injured in the 2013 season and missed nearly half the season. He played in 48 games, yet still scored 32 goals in 48 games! That's a whole season's worth of goals for a skilled player. He'd be up to 50-something that year if he played the full season.
It's also
possible
he may be first player to reach 1000 goals. Of course, to get here, he'll have to get a consistent 40-50 goals for the next several seasons. If he gets at least 50 goals for the next 5 seasons, that's 984. Then 1 more season of making 16 more goals…done. On top of that, he could take a late retirement and play until 45+ like Jagr. Even if he's only producing 15 goals a season by this time, he'd get it done. It's cutting it close, but entirely within reach.
this record will never be broken for centuries.
