He was one of the most elusive QBs in his prime - he was Michael Vick in the pocket and didn't even need to take more than one step. He had the best release of all time, and threw a ton of touchdown passes. Unlike Peyton Manning who got to play in a dome, he had to play in Miami's horrible and muggy weather. Tom Brady has Spygate, Deflategate, rule changes, and Belichick to help him out.
Marino also never got one of the best weapons a QB can have - the play action pass. He had one 1,000 yard RB his entire time. Shula was in such awe of Marino's raw abilities he never bothered to help Marino with an RB. Also Marino was an iron man - without the strike in 1987 he likely would have broke the record for most games in a row by a QB. He also won a ton of games (4th of all time I believe - and 2nd when he retired) and is in the top 3 for most comeback wins ever.
When he retired he held virtually every significant QB record. It took 20 years + rule changes to break his TD passes in a season record, and took 27 years + a TON of rule changes to break his 5,084 yards in a season record. With today's insane rules that favor the offense + today's modern health technology, he would probably throw 60 TDs + 5,500 yards in a season.
Of course, none of this matters though because he never won a SB. Also, he had a strange career being that his prime was EARLY in his career. Most QBs don't hit their prime til ages 27+. Marino hit his prime right away. Marino would have a mini-comeback at age 33 like most QBs do but other than that he digressed a lot when most QBs would hit their prime.
If Dan Marino won just ONE Super Bowl, and won the MVP for that game as well, is he the indisputable GOAT quarterback?
Look at Elway - he's one of the most overrated QBs but is considered one of the best because he won 2 Super Bowls.

Imagine the numbers he would've put up in today's game. I don't think there's a definitive answer for GOAT, but Marino deserves to be in the discussion, at least.
The future is in the hands of a man who has none.
(As in no future, as opposed to no hands.)

Rings aren't required for GOAT status in my eyes. Marino is leaps and bounds the greatest I've ever seen play and is my GOAT. This coming from a Colts fan.

I'd say no. I love Marino but Rings matter. He might have the best arm, talent, and determination. But luck, team, and tangibles have to do with it as well. I place Montana, Otto Graham, and Bradshaw ahead of him.

You are right, when he was playing he was considered an all time great, ahead of Elway but Elway's 2 rings put him in the discussion and kicks Marino out of it. I often argue his case, I hated the Dolphins but Marino was the offense and they had no defense. People say Peyton winning another SB elevates him, but he had nothing to do with it. He was along for the ride

To say it means nothing is not being serious. Its the most important accomplishment in the sport. Now I'm a true born Miami Dolphins Marino Fan. But here is why he is not no.1. The crap that he didnt have good runners is crap. He did have decent runners at certain times but he didnt win. He did have great defenses and special teams. He had good receivers. He had good coaches. He had Jason taylor, zach Thomas, Patrick Surtain, Sam Madison, the list could go and on. He has the most record for 1yrd touchdown passes now that to me is a ridiculous stat because they couldve run the ball a lot more but he was obsesses with throwing it every time. Sometimes that obsesssion cost the team. Some qb's won superbowls because they werent as selfish. Yes he had talent and was a winner but to me he didnt have that sacriface mentality and that made him a loser. The dolphins did win and were pretty dominant before they got there even the undefeated season going all the way with a backup and a bunch of bench players. Marino went to the superbowl and got his ass beat. He was never an elite college player and so wasnt an overall or near the top pick. He had no touch, sorry that sounds terrible, but his balls were so fast he never had touch and that cost for several drops. He was way too tough on his own team and that tended to lower their confidence instead of bring them up. He never took responsibilities for his own mistakes. He won an mvp only early in career. Only one time. Some players won it multiple times. He couldve endured more in his career but quit early. To me he is also sort of a quitter. He couldve had the same front office as Elway and won several sbs for us. Easily. The guy is smart and smarter than elway. But he decided it was too much for him. When the pressure was at its highest he tended to let us down. Could he be considered the greatest? No doubt about it. Is he? You need rings in my book. Yes superbowls are tainted but how can he not win? If he is that damn good? Warner did it and couldve done it two more times easily. Favre at least won one. Elway lost several but he never left the game till he got it done twice. Both Mannings did it. Roethelisberger, Rodgers after favre, Montana, and young after montana. All he has is excuses and talent sorry isnt enough. Winners can win without having the best arm, or most impressive stats. If he is that damn good why isnt a winner?
Why am I such a misfit? I am not just a nitwit.

He was a "gunslinger" like Favre. But it's hard to compare because back then a lot of people threw tons of picks.
These days it's almost impossible to throw a pick. It's so weird and distracting.
QB stats these days are almost pointless.

Yeah I am glad Elway finally got in a good offensive system to win a Super Bowl. His stats in the 90s were very, very good.

how do you explain him going to three Super Bowls before Terrell Davis and Mike Shanahan?
Obviously a product of Dan Reeve's futuristic offensive philosophy and Sammy Winder.
The Broncos didn't become a West Coast team until '93, when magically Elway's numbers started getting a whole lot better.
I think everyone who saw him play would agree that Elway was at his best under Reeves, even though there's no way to make that case statistically. He was carrying that offense. I thought Donovan McNabb in 2000 was another guy who had a great year that wasn't particularly good statistically.

The AFC was hilariously bad in the 80s.
John Elway's stats are hilariously bad even if you adjust for the era. I just can't take a guy who threw only 17 TDs and 19 INTs in his prime seriously.
Elway is good, no doubt, but if he didn't win those 2 Super Bowls he'd be considered a joke. Like poor Dan Marino is now LOL.

Not only is it a team game, the NFL playoffs are one game a round. Anything can happen in a single game of football. Part of what makes the NFL exciting is that underlying principle that a lesser team might win on a given day. Every playoff round is a game 7. But to go along side that, using that as a measure of a player's stature seems dumb.

Okay, just for you Sparky, I'll answer the OP's question seriously.
Dan Marino was a GREAT quarterback, one of the best. But no way was he the greatest. You can make any excuse you want, but in really big games, Marino more often than not would play very poorly, and break your heart with at least one very costly interception.
My lasting image of Marino is him holding his arms to his head after yet another awfully timed interception in any number of playoff games.
One of the greatest arms I've ever seen, but there's no denying how shaky he could get in December and January.
If he had won a Super Bowl, would he be the greatest? Probably not, but it doesn't matter, he never won a Super Bowl and in the one that he was in, he was thoroughly outplayed by a better clutch qb.
