Decided to restart Metroid Prime on PC using a Wii emulator, despite my Gamecube save being close to the end. The controller controls for that game just isn't terribly good.
The Wii version using a mouse already seems a lot more comfortable. Still not great, especially in comparison with, you know, proper mouse and keyboard controls, but it feels better than the original controls. Feels weird having a mouse cursor zipping around the screen by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen. Like a botched marriage of proper shooter controls and light-gun controls. I don't know, it's weird. Wish there was a fan patch to fix the controls, but, hey, at least bettermore accurate, more responsivethan the alternative.
Shame a series of shooters like this is exclusive to consoles. Despite the Metroid series not only being a household name, but also the progenitor of an entire genre, the series isn't exactly a major unit-shifter. According to various sources, the entire series has sold less units combined than Call of Duty: Ghosts. And people wonder why Nintendo aren't farting out a new one each year?
Anyway, great game. Emulators are fantastic. Wish they'd release the Prime series on PC. I assume it'd be met with open arms and a lot of money transfers.
I am on fire, but an extinguisher is not required

Woo, Metroid Prime crossed off the list. Surprised how easy the final bosses turned out to be. First went into the first phase of the boss while having forgot about the super-weapons, without the Ice Spreader,
and
thinking the most effective defence was dodge as it is in most games. After I'd remembered the game's controls, found the final weapon upgrade, and used double jump instead of dodge against most attacks, it was kind of a cake walk.
Kind of a poop ending. Barely is one. Oh well.

So, booted up my old save on the Gamecube at Meta Ridley. I seem to remember this boss fight as a massive chore. Lengthy and dying twice at a point where the boss has, like, a sliver of health left, leaving me with horrible hand cramp and no interest in continuing. This time, though? I just beep him up. Used the red cannon and took him down in about five minutes only losing a bar of health in the process.
Not terribly excited about the next boss fight. Looked at video lengths for this one and the shortest one is, like, fifteen minutes.

I think you'd need the numpad for MORTAL KOMBAT!.
I had a hard enough time with using Zangrief and T.Hawk on controllers. I'd hate to try the double 360 motion on KB.
Hitman 1 on PC has qwe/asd/zxc or numpad movement, it's handled well but still I find it slightly difficult. The mouse for aiming helps quite a bit to that end, though.
Then we'll see how he does up there, without all the assistance.

To be fair, though, I think getting decent controls out of this game would require modifying the actual game code because of how Nintendo it for both the Gamecube and the Wii. This is as good as it gets, unfortunately.

Nintendo. They frequently noted that Metroid Prime wasn't a shooter when they were marketing its release.
That's awkward seeing as how the gameplay is significantly different from the 64-and-onward
Mario
,
Donkey Kong
and
Legend of Zelda
just by virtue of being so shooter-like with the protagonist waling around with her weapon basically always being pointed forward and having to use it in order to complete every objective. Honestly, it feels like it has more in common with shooter games than it does with the other Nintendo games I've mentioned. The main thing that sticks out as non-shooter-like is how Samus Aran only has one projectile weapon albeit with more than one firing mode.

It's not a shooter; yes there's shooting in it but it's primarily an adventure/metroidvania game. It's the same as Portal in that the shooting is only a means to experience the true point of the game rather than being

standard "shooter" games provide an array of projectile weapons that can be picked up
Sure, but you also pick up an array of different weapons in Metroid Prime in the form of extensions of Samus' arm cannon.
the types of projectile weapons may have distinct advantages and disadvantages
Which fits with the various extensions or weapon-types that Samus use.
Ultimately, though, I don't really care. You can call it a unicorn for all I care. I called it a shooter because it plays like a shooter. A game can fit more than one genre anyway, so not exactly sure why people are making a fuss about it in the first place.

Not important.
(I've been looking around on Wikipedia.) If you think about it, though, standard "shooter" games provide an array of projectile weapons that can be picked up and set down or swapped out for other projectile weapons, if not all accumulated, and the types of projectile weapons may have distinct advantages and disadvantages, like how the usefulness of a "sawed-off shotgun" is distinct from the usefulness of "sniper rifle".
Metroid Prime
doesn't provide this functionality. Samus Aran just has the arm cannon with a few different firing modes, and there's no telescopic sight targeting mode.
