After the others were dead, Ben went down to the basement and saved his own ass proving that Cooper was right all along.
If they had all gone down to the basement they would've survived and they would've been able to overpower and kill the little girl when she became a zombie.

Ben did his best, that son of a bitch Cooper had his bitch daughter in the basement who later killed his wife. Cooper also got those 2 kids killed by not helping, as well as Barbara by again by not helping. Until B&B ran into Cooper, they were doing fine as a couple trying to survive and it was their encounter with Cooper which got Babs to be zombie lunch after seeing Johnny. Had they all went into the basement as baldy wanted, going up the stairs was there only way out if them zombies had broke in and figured out where they where. Plus Cooper wouldnt give up the shotgun, or put his daughter out of her misery. At least with up stairs theres a front door, a back door, windies, stairs leading to bedrooms/bathroom which also have windies. Leaving them a fighting chance!
