My dad thinks I'm mad but I can't cope with the front fence. The landlord did it all but it's not tall enough. And that's where the idea of post extenders came from. I can use those and store the landlord's fencing in the shed and use my own. <img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/1f937.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--shrug" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title="" alt="🤷" />‍<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2640.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--female_sign" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":female_sign:" alt="♀" />️</p>

<p dir="auto">I asked Chat GPBT<br />
Yes — those fence post extenders are a real thing and people do use them. Your idea isn’t mad at all <img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/1f642.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--slightly_smiling_face" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":slightly_smiling_face:" alt="🙂" /> They’re literally designed for the exact situation you’re describing: when the posts are already in but the fence height isn’t enough.<br />
Here are a couple of common ones so you know what they look like:<br />
Do they actually work?<br />
Yes — within limits.<br />
They’re basically a metal sleeve or bracket that fits over the existing post, then you insert a new piece of post on top and screw/bolt it together.<br />
They’re commonly used to:<br />
raise a fence by up to about 1 metre<br />
add trellis panels for privacy<br />
repair damaged or cut posts without digging them out<br />
So technically your plan — store the landlord’s panels and put your own taller ones up — could work if the posts are compatible.<br />
The good parts<br />
People like them because:<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> No digging up posts<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> Cheap (£2–£10 each usually)<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> Quick DIY job<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> Reversible (good for renting)<br />
The downsides<br />
The main catch is strength.<br />
Because the post is now effectively in two pieces:<br />
they’re not as strong as a full post<br />
tall solid panels can catch wind<br />
if the original posts are weak or shallow, it can wobble<br />
They work best when:<br />
the original posts are solid and well concreted<br />
you’re only adding 30–60 cm<br />
the fence panels aren’t super heavy.<br />
One thing to watch (in the UK)<br />
If the fence faces the road or pavement, councils usually limit it to about 1 m high.<br />
Between gardens it’s usually 2 m max without planning permission.<br />
So if your landlord installed a low front fence, that might be why.<br />
Your idea specifically<br />
Your plan actually makes sense for a renter:<br />
remove the landlord panels<br />
keep them safe in the shed<br />
extend posts<br />
fit your own taller panels<br />
put the originals back when you leave<br />
That’s exactly the sort of situation extenders are handy for.<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> reversible<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> cheap<br />
<img src="https://filmglance.com/discuss/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/2714.png?v=8570fb93240" class="not-responsive emoji emoji-android emoji--heavy_check_mark" style="height:23px;width:auto;vertical-align:middle" title=":heavy_check_mark:" alt="✔" /> no permanent change<br />
One honest tip<br />
Before buying anything, check what the posts are:<br />
timber 75×75mm<br />
timber 100×100mm<br />
concrete posts<br />
Because the extender has to match the size.</p>
