New York City was a very dangerous place during this area. Its hard for people, particularly those of the Millennial generation to understand how bad NYC was during this time. You couldn't walk outside at night alone; it was four to a group, otherwise, you were sure to get mugged. Places like Brooklyn, which are now vibrant hipster havens, were not places you went out to after sundown. It was a very dirty city and even places like Times Square weren't exactly the place to be.
I don't think any other film really captured the bleak, dangerous, and downright horrific nature of the NYC of this period as well as
Ghost
did. Now, New York is just about the safest big city in the world. But there was a time when it was a dark and scary place as they depicted it in this movie.

New York was once for the poor, now it's for the rich. Make sense out of that as you will.

You mean it's safe now? I heard every american can easily buy a gun, so I would still be afraid to walk in such places at night.

Me, too, Jediknight29. The Freedom Tower is beautiful, but, not as beautiful as the Twin Towers. All of the lives lost is heartbreaking.

I agree with that. This movie really captured 1980's New York big time many millennials especially younger millennials cannot imagine just how gritty it was, because I'm one of them my parents tell me about the city before it was gentrified. They once went to Williamsburg 30 years ago long before the hipsters made it their enclav. Burned down houses, high crime, you looked over your shoulder constantly.

New York's grit and grime was also showcased in
Serpico
,
Taxi Driver
and
Midnight Cowboy
, a bit further back.
I'm a Millennial, technically, but old enough to remember what New York looked like when it was just beginning to emerge from that kind of atmosphere. It was a dirty and dangerous place to be feared by suburban kids like me. The trains were still covered with graffiti. One of the reasons I love this film is how well it captured the look and feel the city during my childhood. A dangerous, but adventurous place.

A few other movies that show the old days of NYC are "Marathon Man", "Fort Apache, the Bronx" and "Wolven".

Ghost
may be the best representation of old-school gritty New York from the late '80s/early '90s, but it's not the best of all time.
Maniac
(1980) is such a bleak, dirty, run-down look at early 1980s New York that I can't even bring myself to watch it a second time due to it being so effective in a "I need to shower after this movie" kind of way. I mean, the subject matter of the movie contributes to that, but still, the NY setting of the movie is quite a depressing one to behold.
