I think that was the exact purpose of the movie, yet it wasn't clear at all why these women should be honored, because they weren't particularly brilliant, nor did they do anything particularly valuable (they were one of many - cogs in the machine).

Sometimes movies and books are written just to honor the people in it. Not for any particular entertainment reason. You know?

Not only was it very boring, it was very pointless. These women were clearly presented as one of many and there was never any suggestion that they were particularly brilliant. There was slight interest with the "overcoming the prejudice" storyline, but it was clear in the movie itself that many black women did that at NASA. I already know black women can be really good mathematicians/engineers/scientists. I also know things were crappy in the south in the 60's. I don't need an entire movie to tell me that simply for the purpose of telling me that. There was no other plot besides that, and that's a very weak plot.

I realize I was supposed to be amazed by these women, but nothing about them was presented as amazing.

those are different I mean the deliberately and poorly designed Oscar bait movies. Hidden Figures is a great example of that.

In fairness, I was actually quite impressed with the Oscar noms this year. In recent years I've disliked so many of them; however, Fences, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Hacksaw Ridge are all very good. Definitely give Lion a try if you haven't seen it yet.
