Sigourney Weaver was forced to undergo years of therapy to rebuild her self-esteem after her mother dismissed her as a "plain"-looking girl during her youth.
The actress turned to her mother, stage actress Elizabeth Inglis, for reassurance about her looks when she was being bullied at school - but was traumatised when her mum described her features as ordinary.
And she insists she had to have &q5b4uot;lots and lots of therapy" to recover from her mother's harsh remarks.
She says, "I always felt gangly. I was teased at school for being a too-tall beanpole and I yearned to be the pretty one. When I was about eight, I asked my mum if I was pretty. She said, 'No, dear, you're just plain.'
"That was, well, hard. I thought, 'Gee, if your mom doesn't even think you are pretty' It took me a long time to realise I was prettier than plain."
What a bitch of a mother.

I just discovered Elizabeth was Sigorney's mom. I read an article about how her mother discouraged her from acting. Sigorney is plain looking. The only time sje looked beaitiful was in 4 movies - Ghostbusters, Witness and The Year of Living Dangerously and The Ice Storm.

I believe that all parents let their children down in some way.
Not all children require years of therapy in order to recover from what Ms. Weaver seems to have considered the traumatic experience of being told she wasn't pretty at age 8.
Many others do legitimately require therapy to deal with ACTUAL abuse and cruelty.

You believe that every parent has told their child that they are "plain"? Well, I can't speak on behalf of other children, but, my Mother never told me that. That makes you wrong.

If you think that Sigourney Weaver's mother telling her : 'No, dear, you're just plain' constitutes child abuse, then I guess everyone in the world has been "abused".
