it's kind of a stupid plot!
The thing is they have two contradictory things they have to fix. They both have to catch or kill the escaped convicts AND stop the train (in order to SAVE the ppl on it)
If the warden could get a helicopter in order to catch the convicts, WHY COULDNT THE COMPANY HAVE DONE THE SAME IN ORDER TO STOP THE TRAIN? No they're only talking about derailing it and all sorts of extreme solutions where ppl may be killed or buildings exploding.
First they ask themselves the whole movie: "what are we gonna do to solve this? how can we stop it?" and they don't find an answer.
Then at the same time when the warden asks himself: "how can I kill these guys?" he simply answers "it's easy I just get a helicopter and get on the train."
If they wanted them killed why bother getting on the train?
It's like this movie both wants to have its cake and eat it. But maybe it's the kind of stupidity that has some philosophical message. That killing someone is a greater motivation than trying to save someone?
Also how did they know the convicts are on that precise train? they could've picked any train. Even if someone saw them from a distance there is no way they could identify them on a high speeding train.
I still love the movie though. It's just so bizarre.
well since you're naked you might as well f___ a friend of mine. Paul come in here!

No one ever sets out to kill escaped convicts, they attempt to capture them.

It's bizarre alright. I think they mainly wanted to portray how people react under pressure, how enemies become friends and vice versa. I love the triangle voigt-roberts-de mornay. Lovely little drama between the three.
The next wings you see will be the fly's buzzing over your rotting corpse.

Yeah, the jail guy could've waited for the train to get to the end of the line, see if there was any survivors, then take them back to prison, he should never have got on that train.
