Week five turned out to be the most exciting weekend of college football thus far this season, with a tidal wave of upsets bringing down some of the highest-ranked teams in every power conference. Some of these upsets were correctly predicted by yours truly.
We'll begin in the Big Ten, where - in the best game of the week - 6th-ranked Oregon knocked off 3rd-ranked Penn State in double overtime, unranked Iowa took down 11th-ranked Indiana, and 23rd-ranked Illinois managed the slight upset of 21st-ranked USC. The top ranked Ohio State Buckeyes remained undefeated against Washington, although they too were looking a bit rough early on. Elsewhere in the conference, Minnesota defeated Rutgers, Northwestern beat UCLA, and 19th-ranked scUM had the week off.
In the ACC, 8th-ranked Florida State fell to unranked Virginia, while 16th-ranked Georgia Tech defeated unranked Wake Forest by just a single point in overtime.
The Big 12 too saw an upset, with unranked Arizona State's win over 24th-ranked TCU. 25th-ranked BYU is trailing unranked Colorado as of this writing. Elsewhere in the conference, 14th ranked Iowa State stayed undefeated and the Cincinnati Bearcats beat the Kansas Gayhawks.
But it was the top-ranked teams of the ASS-EC who saw the worst of the upsets, with 13th-ranked Ole Miss taking out 4th-ranked LSU and 17th-ranked Alabama defeating 5th-ranked Georgia. One wonders how they will manage to keep any ASS-EC team in the top five after this, but I'm sure they will find a way 🙄 I even made the mistake myself of putting faith in the ASS-EC's Arkansas to put Notre Dame out of their misery for the season and they proved themselves not even close to being up to the task.
