Is this sort of prostitution/escorting legal or illegal in the US?
I'm a bit puzzled and here's why.
In the film, Detective Sunday (Hector Elizondo) says to Julian Kay (Richard Gere), "Doesn't it bother you what you do, it's illegal". But escorts have their own websites. As long as they don't pester women for sex, or solicit them, then it isn't illegal. Of course I know the web didn't exist in 1980, but even so, as long as he doesn't solicit, how can it be illegal? If he collects someone from the airport as a chauffeur and drives them to a hotel, then isn't what happens after a private matter, and legal, as long as no coercion is involved?

Escorts are supposed to just 'escort' people on a date, or whatever, so they're allowed to advertise. Back then, people would have found escort services in the newspaper or phonebook. Everyone knows it's actually prostitution, however, and they can still get caught.
