before finding out whether it was true. It's an irresponsible and nasty thing to do, to try and manipulate people's strong feelings about pets and get them to hate a very vulnerable and impoverished group.
So you don't have to call people names to be a racist. You can stealthily discredit another group by high-mindedly taking a stand against a completely fictitious narrative.
That's racism of a particularly nasty variety.
