I have a Steepeltone vinyl record player that but when I use headphones with it the sound still seems to be coming from the speakers - it's too loud to listen to as I'm worried other people are able to hear it if I'm listening to it at night - does anyone else have this problem with this kind of record player or know a way to mute the speakers when listening through headphones?

If the sound is a buzz, record players require grounding, by connecting a little horseshoe-shaped ground wire, right next to the white and red left and right RCA cables coming out of the record player, to a screw-tightened adaptor terminal on a receiver. Newer receivers, which are geared toward CD players and other digital sources, might lack this ground terminal.

Some of those turntables have a jack for a sub woofer. Could you be using that plug instead of a headphone jack?
