If I let the CD play from the start without pressing "Next" to advance it, it will play through to the end, but if I want to skip a track and press the "Next" button, it will advance to the next track but will not play it. Any ideas?

Get another from a thrift store or pawn shop, then go Office Space on the old one.

Get the laser cleaned. If that doesn't work it's probably buggered.
