I think I developed my preferences from my grandmother's cooking and my great-grandmother's cooking. Off hand, I don't recall diced veggies in their dishes.
I was also eating Macrobiotics for quite a while, and if you're following it to the letter, there are very strict rules for how you cut each piece of food and even how you cook them and what foods should not be cooked together (such as just stir-frying a bunch of veggies together, as that would be a total no-no!)

My friend and her mother-in-law nearly came to blows over the right way to cut up a cauliflower. People have really strong opinions about the cutting of their caulis and other miscellaneous veggies.
