Dog rescues missing Toddler in the Desert
Thank you, Buford! Hero dog finds missing toddler who wandered 7 miles from Arizona home.
The 6-year-old Anatolian Pyrenees came home Tuesday morning with the toddler.
Buford: The hero loves children.
On April 14, about 40 searchers, rescuers and officers from several law enforcement agencies searched the rugged, rural terrain of northern Arizona to find missing 2-year-old, Boden Allen.
The boy had wandered off in his pajamas from his home in Seligman.
They looked through the night and spotted two mountain lions along the way, according to a news release from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. Rancher's dog named Buford found him, the Sheriff confirmed.
After the 16th hour, the rancher reported Allen had walked onto his property 7 miles from the boy's home.
He said Buford found the boy while patrolling his land and likely shepherded him to safety.
The boy told the rancher he slept under a tree.
It is unclear how a 2-year-old could have traveled seven miles on foot.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 2-year-olds are still learning coordination when they walk and they have a very short attention span. Most children don't have enough motor skills to participate in sports until they are at least 6.
The Sheriff's Office thanked the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, search and rescue teams, and the public for sharing missing person flyers.
"And of course, Buford the dog, who stayed with the boy and brought him to safety,"
the Sheriff's Office said.
