I believe consciousness continues after death at least temporarily. Documented Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and recent scientific studies showing that brain cells remain alive even after our heart stops beating prove that there's more to the process of dying than we've been led to believe. But is there an actual afterlife, another plane of existence, that our soul (consciousness) goes to after our body dies? We'll only know for sure when we're dead. I'm optimistic about it either way - another existence would be nice but complete nonexistence also has its good points.
