It depends on how rare intelligent life is and how big the universe is. If the universe is infinite with the same conditions everywhere then there would have to be life elsewhere, but it could be the circumstances required to turn rock into living creatures are so rare that we could be the only life within many billions of light years.

It is possible we are alone. It's one of the many hypotheses on the question. As of now, with so little knowledge, so much is possible.
I forgot who said it, but there's this quote that's like we are either aloje in the universe or we're not. Both are equally terrifying. I actually don't feel scared of either though. 14 year old me would agree with that quote though.
