I happen to feel that the lighting is very important to the film. I notice it's not a popular topic. It's black magic; worth looking into. May be too well guarded though.

It's not that magic, just a matter of the type of light source and the direction. Read some books, and experiment with a camera. Maybe use small LED lamps and dolls, rather than shooting full-scale.
