Like say Grocery Outlet rounds up for the local food bank. At the end of the time, the food bank advertises
"Grocery Outlet has donated $$$$$.$$ to us." The fact that it was donated by customers doesn't come out.

at those stores i just give them cash and don't bother with the prompts. i even tell them i don't do prompts if i have to. i tell the gym i don't do pictures. i tell the cops i don't do tests. i have my own frame of reference and don't assume they know more than to repeat what they've been trained to do.

Yeah, even if you pay in cash at stores that do the round-up thing, the screen will still prompt you if you want to round up. And actually, that might be a desirable option if you don't want to hassle with loose change. Say your total comes to $19.87, and it asks you if you want to round it up to $20 even, I'd accept that, if I was paying cash. Just drop an even $20 bill and not be burdened with the 13¢ in change, because as we all know 13 is bad luck. You could meet an unpleasant fate on the way to the parking lot even.

just pay in cash at a place where you don't need a membership so you don't have to go through 12 screens to check out.

A small item or two they can slip into a bag I suppose they can still get away with. But they can't do multiple items and thieve on any grand kind of scale.

We have a chain of shops where the self checkout knows the weight of whatever you're putting on the scanned item side before you pay and pack. If something doesn't add up, the red light goes on the staff come to check. So unless people are putting **** in their backpacks or handbags, it's a bit harder to cheat that particular chain.

However…
Having heard and seen videos of those dishonest people who shop lift by only scanning a few items while they attempt to steal the rest of what they have by not scanning, I am suddenly leary of them.
For one thing, the stores have to hire employees to stand and watch you scan the items. That alone, makes me feel like a thief even though I'm honest.
I'd just as soon go through the checkout line and have that employee scan my items.

I donate directly to my favorite charity… our local animal shelter.

I guess that I just don't pay attention when I'm in the grocery stores.
I pretty much shop on line or put in an order to Walmart and go pick it up without going into the store. It saves me time, I don't have to deal with a bunch of people in the aisles, and no more impulse purchases.
If there was anything positive that came out of the horrible pandemic, it was curbside pickup. The rest is a terrible nightmare!
