Everyone needs a tutor for everything in the beginning, the only question being what use you want to make of him: have him solve individual problems for you or teach you the problem solving skills you need to solve them yourself, so you don't have to depend on anyone else in the future.
In this case, I admit that it takes a little effort initially to wrap your head around the basic principle, but once it's understood it suddenly becomes very natural and easy to apply.

It's fairly straightforward, once you know that to add (or subtract) fractions you have to find the common denominator of the terms involved. In this case the common denominator between the given denominators 4 and 2 is 4, so you 'rephrase' the individual terms accordingly
5 + 3/4 = 20/4 + 3/4 = 23/4 first term
2 + 1/2 = 4/2 + 1/2 = 5/2 = 10/4 second term
meaning the result is
23/4 - 10/4 = 13/4
PS: This isn't really what people typically call math, by the way; it's basic arithmetic.
