I can't think in a situation where that would ever be handy.
In order to start a load of laundry, you have to be there to put in the load. And if you are, then you may as well start it right then, while you're there.
What would be the point in putting in a load of laundry, then going away from home, and starting it later? Sometimes technology is pointless.
