I'm having an OCD moment with the announcement.
"we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards"
First, they say they're disabling it. Disabling something like this usually means simply disallowing new user account creation, logging in, commenting, messaging, etc but the content will remain to be read. It's like when you find a blog and want to comment but the comment section's been disabled/closed yet you can still read what was posted in the past. That's what it means to disable some content.
Then, they use cryptic wording to make it sound like they're deleting the boards: "users will have ample time to archive any message board content they'd like to keep for personal use."
I guess that means it's all really being deleted? Gone for good??
Or is it all going to be transformed into a new message board??? "help our customers communicate and express themselves"
It's like they can't make up their mind about what they are going to do. Their decision was obviously a knee-jerk reaction made in haste. Making it up as they go along, I bet. That's the good old Amurrcan way.
So, there, in one announcement, they are going to do three things: disable the boards, delete the board content, and supposedly create a new message board? What?
Why not just leave this one alone? Duhhhh.

Thanks for the info and the links!!!
I am sure going to miss the boards.
I have yet to see this supposed social media site where they say most users are now discussing topics Where would that be? Twitter? FB? Those things are good for specific types of interaction but they're HORRIBLE in terms of the types of discussions which need to take the form of a message board - discussions about movies/actors/directors/etc. It was weird when the comments section of other parts of this site switched over to using FB, so I kinda figured they'd incorporate FB more into the site and "replace" the old boards with FB login and commenting/posting. Like I said, they have no idea what they're really doing, making dumb calls, whatever.
I don't buy into any excuse about the server costs. It's so full of ads, I don't see how they are going broke. Then again, I use ad blocking to the max

The big tip-off is the "archive your ish" statement, and the blog announcements that mentioned that the running costs were a major reason for the decision to close the boards. They're going to be deleted, no static archive or anything, I'm pretty sure about that.
The Archive Team agrees, and is already hard at work dumping all the forums and archiving them. You can see it in action here:
http://tracker.archiveteam.org/imdb/
If you want to help the effort, you can download the Archive Team Warrior and contribute to the dumping, it's fully automatic. The full archives of the boards will likely be uploaded to the Internet Archive, as is customary for Archive Team projects.
