I'm getting back into my artwork, and I have some pencils floating around. I can't get over how different the quality is between brands. I've got a box of Primacolour and a box of Hethrone that have three layers/rows of various shades per box. I also came across two cups of pencils (thrift store cups into which I placed a few dozen colour pencils each, and in no logical order) that I just apparently plopped in there, so it's a mix of different brands (some of which I cannot read the printing on). Any other artists out there who have a favourite brand or know of good quality brands?
It's so frustrating. I'm drawing and colouring in horror pictures and some of the pencils barely show, transferring more like a wax, and others which look more like lumpy mixtures of dark and light colours.

I totally agree.
I'm a bit out of my depth because I have a very particular and specific style that is not very family friendly, so when asked to complete something more "normal", it really takes a lot out of me. It's more challenging than you'd think.

I just purchased some and also just got some new heavy bond paper.
I've been commissioned to create a piece of art, and the parameters are pretty wide, so I need to think of something "neutral" since it's going to be in an office. My "style" tends to be pretty dark, so I have to tone it down. Way, way down. I have to tap into something new for this. This should be interesting.
I'm open to suggestions.

I remember Faber-Castell from when I was a kid. The quality of pencil is vital. The wrong quality can ruin every attempt, as can the wrong paper.
I've just ordered some new heavy bond paper. There aren't any paper stores near me, which sucks. I really prefer being able to feel the paper because texture is vital when drawing. I don't like flat, smooth paper. I need a degree of drag when using pencil, graphite or charcoal.
Dammit, that reminds me, I forgot to order erasers.
I just did a horror portrait of a woman, sort of a vampire clown, with bright blue eyes (there's almost 5 shades of blue in her eyes alone) and ginger hair (with at least 7 shades of red, auburn, black, brown, orange, gold and 2 shades of silver and grey streak on the left side), with green slime coming out of her eyes, purple pom-poms on her purple and grey frill collar and a lime green coil on the side of her hair. There are random drops of blood dribbled all over the portrait. Her eyebrows are flames. She's wearing black lipstick with hints of purple. If you look closely, you'll see blue eyes being hidden in the hair and frills of her collar.

The ones I'm using feel rather waxy which lends itself to a lack of pigment coming through. The two brands are extremely different. I also have a third brand thrown in there (when I looked at my collection in the cup, I'm seeing several pencils with just their associated colour numbers, but no brand label).
This is reminding me why I used to primarily work in graphite or charcoal and stick to black & white. Colours can be really challenging.

For professional grade, Caran d'Ache Luminance 6901 which has a great creamy texture, or Derwent Lightfast, another creamy texture, oil based. There are different types and blends. There are waxy blends which are nice. They are not cheap, though.
