I liked the TV series and this was a fitting way to cap it - except I now realise there is one more later film I must hunt down.
It's in the British spy tradition of everything seeming a bit grubby and low-cost but tough and hard-edged at the same time. In this story the conscience handicapped Callan has been discharged from the service and placed in an unhappy and humiliating job (because what else can a former convict and trained killer do). But the service wants him back and the job placement was part of a long term plan.
I was wondering why there was no talk of rebooting the show but perhaps Slow Horses has filled that slot for now?
I have always depended on the kindness of Strangers - and the bastards let me down!
