Okay This is by far one of my fav. movies of all time and though I've seen it a thousand times I always notice something new with each viewing. But I know many people have question about the opening scene from 1965 during the poker game and talent showhere is the breakdown
The Guy that is playing poker with Eddie is Bobby, the LEAD singer of The Five Heartbeats. They were the "wannabe hustlers" of the group trying to cheat some men in a game of poker.
The way I figured out that he was the lead singer is because when Choirboy is in a panic because he's nervous about the steps and them being on next he says "We're on next, Bobby's not here". The in the scene where Dresser goes to talk to duck while he's writing he says, "Well Bobby's not here so you're gonna have to sing his parts, Eddie's not here either but we don't really need him." Duck"Why does he keep doing this s**t? He knows I wrote everything in five part harmony. Five PART Harmony!"
Then you seen Eddie and Bobby running from the poker guys, Bobby gets shot in his leg then rolls off a car and lands on the other one. Eddie then runs in on stage like a bat outta hell steals the mic from chiorboy and starts singing. Then all of the other members look confused and Duck whispers to Eddie "Where's Bobby" he strugs that he doesn't know Duck just says "let's do it".
At the resturant when Jimmy approaches them he says "I especially liked that opening, Man (looks at Eddie) you looks like you were running for your life". THAT'S CAUSE HE WAS!
The did a horrible job of expaining where he wentdid he get shot or what?

Better late than neverbut id like to continue this thread.
i dont think it was a plot hole. I think leaving out unnecessary information and letting the viewer use its imagination is good storytelling.
In the scene when waiting for Bobby, Duck said songs are written in 5 part harmony. Then somebody said the group didn't really need Eddie. He may have just been a back up; they didn't realize he could be a powerful lead. Once Eddie turned it out, they didn't need Bobby anymore. Eddie was the ticket to get them to the next level. No real reason to explain what happened to Bobby.
you can't get it, cause aint got it!

Sorry this is in reply to a post that's yrs old but basically can be assumed from Duck's comment that he is always late/or not there. That they assumed to move on without him they gave him chances and he blew it.
Can also be assumed either Eddie choose not to reveal that he was with Bobby (gambling) and allowed the group to believe Bobby just ran out on them (again).
I'm not too familiar with the real life group of The Temptations but recall in the TV movie about them they also had a member who was nvr willing to put in the work so they let him go. Not referring to Eddie Hendricks but another guy that started out w/ Otis Williams when the group was freshly starting.
Poop in his hand Poop in his hand

That is a big, wide, and ugly plot hole. Was there no possible way of showing a scene where a wounded Bobby announces that he's quitting the group (or that he's unable to dance anymore, since he got shot in the leg)?
(And yes, the scene needs to be shown, and not rattled off as exposition by one of the characters: "Man, Bobby quit the group.")

That's the impression I got as well. Bobby is out and Eddie is in. Most likely in an off-screen moment, Bobby is nursing a shot leg and is no longer part of the group.
America put the "fun" back into "Fundamentalism".
