I assume the OP meant ethnically Jewish. If your mother is Jewish, you are Jewish. Belief in God doesn't factor in; for instance, my partner came out of a Jewish vagina, therefore he's Jewish. He's also an atheist, and that fact doesn't force a contradiction. There are plenty of Jewish atheists out there.

You are not born a religious person or automatically a subscriber to a particular course of belief system.
Religion is not genetic. You are born free and innocent ready to learn everything, then your parents proceed to mess you up!
(not you personally, but generally speaking of course)

People get that impression because he sounds intellectual and cosmopolitan. His mother was an archaeologist and his father, a museum director. His background is mainly Scottish Protestant.
