I have been a Robert Shaw fan for years and from what I have read, money was not ever a problem for him.
Since Robert Shaw was not a US citizen, he flew to Canada for 24 hours every 29 days(?). This was so his pay would not be double taxed, once for Ireland and once for the US. Spielberg shot around Shaw's scheduled absences.
I am unsure of how many consecutive days he had to be in the US to have his pay taxed, but if you find an old copy of 'The Jaws Log' it is explained there.

I've actually since discovered that he did have financial issues. Not problems really he was just pissed off at the UK's draconian taxation laws a the time to such an extent he relocated to Ireland where indeed he passed away.
Though none of that would have affected him working in the USA. He was just basically pissed off at having to pay massive taxation back in England. He never actually owed any money or anything like that.

Never heard that. His career went through a bit of a renaissance if you like after Jaws (as you would expect as both the film and he made a huge impact) and he was cast in some very big budget Hollywood action pictures such as 'Black Sunday', 'Force 10 from Navarone','Diamonds' and 'The Deep'.
You may be getting confused with the casting history to the Quint character. Originally Spielberg wanted Lee Marvin but he wasn't interested. Then Spielberg cast Sterling Hayden but he couldn't do it as he was unable to enter the USA without having to first pay huge back tax debts to the IRS. So Shaw was eventually cast.
