Articles from Cary Stayner's trial:
"Kay Stayner said that although her father molested her as a child, she allowed him to live in the Stayner home but kept him away from her daughters.
But according to court testimony, the girls weren't safe. State authorities said Delbert Stayner molested them."
"The details of the possible mental problems [Cary Stayner] suffered growing up are revealed in a psychiatrist's evaluation filed by his defense attorneys in Santa Clara County Superior Court. According to the report, Stayner's family had a history of pedophilia, drug abuse, and neuropsychological dysfunction.
Psychiatrist George Woods, who evaluated Stayner at the Fresno County Jail over the course of a year, talked to relatives and reviewed court records, said in his report that Stayner's family had a history of dysfunction dating back three generations.
Stayner was molested by an uncle, and his sisters were abused by their father, according to Woods' evaluation. In 1986, according to the report, Stayner's father, Delbert Stayner, was accused of sexually molesting his daughters and was ordered into therapy by state authorities.
A Stayner relative told Woods that she believed that sexual abuse of children "has been going on for so long, it's like a sickness in the family."
Efforts to reach Delbert Stayner on Monday were unsuccessful.
When Cary Stayner was 11, his younger brother, Steven, was kidnapped.
Shortly afterward, Cary Stayner was abused by an uncle who had been convicted of child molestation, according to the report.
"Although (the uncle's) sexual proclivities were well known to Cary's older male cousins, he was nevertheless allowed to take boys for overnights in his tiny apartment," Woods wrote.
One evening, the uncle showed Stayner and his cousin nude pictures of young girls. Then Stayner and his uncle went to sleep in the same bed. Stayner awoke to find the uncle removing his underwear and attempting to molest him, the evaluation says."
"Cary Stayner's childhood was filled with incest, molestation, and the abduction of his younger brother by a sexual predator."
"Much of the testimony the defense has tried to introduce, such as the molestation of one of Stayner's sisters by their father, has been barred due to objections by the prosecution."
These parents were beyond dysfunctional. The Stayners were an incestuous family, with child molestation, domestic violence, mental illness, and substance abuse going back generations. This was the real reason why Delbert and Kay Stayner were opposed to their children receiving professional help. They were also known to be cold and emotionally distant from their children; it is believed that Cary suffered the most neglect, to the point that psychiatrists who examined him for trial diagnosed him as socially dysfunctional, among other things. However, he was not diagnosed as psychopathic by any of the psychiatrists who evaluated him, including the one hired by the prosecution. This is important because documentaries gloss over Cary's trial, and that is deliberate. There's a reason why his being a serial killer doesn't make sense, even with the family history. The only reason the parents allowed this information to come out was because Cary was facing the death penalty; after the trial, they went back to denial.
One court-appointed psychiatrist (who became a key defense witness) noted that Cary witnessed his sisters being molested, which coincided with the violent sexual fantasies he began having at a young age. Not only is this extremely disturbing, but it also makes you wonder what else these children experienced and witnessed. I'm inclined to think that what was brought up at the trial only scratched the surface; it was probably a lot worse. Cary was blamed by his father for not walking home with Steven on the day of the kidnapping, and Delbert admitted that he used that as a reason to push Cary away and mistreat him during those years. He also admitted to mistreating Cary as an infant, screaming at him to shut up when he cried, which could explain why Cary was diagnosed with trichotillomania at age 3. The uncle who abused Cary (who was murdered in 1990) was a known predator, yet Cary and some of his male cousins were sent to spend the night at Uncle Jerry's house. These parents basically set their kids up to be abused.
The predator grandfather mentioned in one of the articles is the same one who was living in close proximity (200 feet) to Kenneth Parnell at the time of Steven's abduction. What are the odds of that - Steven's grandfather, who was also a child molester

They were not Southern and they were not poor. Incestuous families exist in all social and economic classes.
