I found it a bit odd that the "police-person" just sat there and smiled during the big "explanation" scene without saying anything. Although I see the actress is German, so maybe she has an accent which might have sounded odd in an American movie.

Yes. Marino was alright. Very tough-cop, but he respected what the 'policeperson' did. In the 70s, feminists wanted non-gender words, like 'chairperson', so Marino was being a little ironic but in a good way.

I think the policepersons line was meant to show respect on Marino's part. In the late 1970s, there was still some debate as to whether women should be cops. Marino was just acknowledging the fact that she wasn't a man, but he didn't want to highlight her feminine gender; therefore, he kept it neutral by referring to her as a "police person."
Ironically, Angie Dickinson played a female cop in "Police Woman," which itself was groundbreaking for showing a woman in a traditionally masculine profession.
