He dropped out after Gloria Steinem begged him not to play the character because so many teenage girls were following the pulse of his career.
Which is somewhat funny because American Psycho was directed by a woman and parodied and critiqued the Male Gaze. Still though, teen girls would not have picked up on that subtext.

It was a commentary on the soullessness of Yuppie culture of the Reagan 80s. The author of the book lived the life of Bateman and his pals.
I read the book. The film held back A LOT.
But yes, the film isnt deep. I wouldn't call it dumb either, though, it's a glossy, sleazy, piece of postmodern irony, almost as hollow as it's main character, but intentionally so.

I had not actually seen this movie until recently, when my brother wanted to watch it with me.
What a ****ty film. OMG THIS RICH WALL STREET GUY KILLS PEOPLE AND GETS AWAY WITH IT! WOW SUCH EDGY SOCIAL COMMENTARY! Sorry, but it isn't edgy, it isn't shocking, it has absolutely nothing to say, and there is absolutely nothing even remotely compelling about it. It is a dumb, brainless, ridiculous glorified splatter movie that doesn't even have the balls to actually show its splatter scenes, playing it safe and keeping everything sanitized for mainstream audiences. No wonder teenage edgelords love it so much.
