<p dir="auto">but not without charm and (as others have observed) the last fifteen minute siege and shoot out is especially good. The extra details of the home owners getting out of the way and the close observation of some of the policemen just make it better. For me Peter Lorre is the stand out - there is just a whole different style about his performance.<br />
I have always depended on the kindness of Strangers - and the bastards let me down!</p>

<p dir="auto">Certainly prefer Leslie Banks-Peter Lorre to Jimmy Stewart-Doris Day. The earlier version oozes atmosphere.<br />
The final shootout is based on the famous Siege of Sidney Street.<br />
