<p dir="auto">In 2004, he was pitching an idea for a movie called The Desperate to various studios, who complained that the screenplay was too violent, and the plot was too close to Saw. James Wan and Leigh Whannell caught wind of this, and called him the day Saw came out in theaters and asked if he was interested in reworking The Desperate as Saw II. He agreed. Whannell helped him adapt the screenplay to fit into the Saw universe and eventually signed Darren on to direct it as well.<br />
