Did you know this is the same philosophy behind what Scientologists call "silent birth" when women give birth. It's not that they expect women to be totally silent; that's a misnomer. Their belief (which I think is actually pretty interesting) is that while the birthing mother is of course allowed to express the pain she is experiencing, they encourage the women to remain as calm as they possibly can, no cussing or anger, all in the belief that if a mother is experiencing/expressing anger or violent thoughts while birthing, that the infant can "pick up" on those emotions and feelings. Their goal is to always keep the mother as happy and calm as possible from conception to birth.
Scientology may well be a cult, but when it comes to this, I think they're onto something. I think fetuses pick up on things going on in the woman's life - much more than we are aware of.
