There's a ton a reasons why someone can be bitchy though. Like some people are just naturally unpleasant. I might be reading too much into it, but I'm thinking neither girls had a good home life growing up, and maybe Elsa was just bitter at life in general (which didn't seem to be going anywhere), and couldn't stand how happy her sister was with things like getting a crown in a local pageant.

Miscasting is an issue in too many movies.

WELLin the book, Elsa is overweight and unattractive. Therefore, it would make sense for her to be Jelous of her extremely attractive/ popular younger sister. However, in the movie Elsa just looks like your average runway model (with glasses) so her but bitchiness is not really warranted here lol

Elsa was jealous that Helen was prettier and more popular. She won the beauty queen pageant which is a big deal in their town. Also, Helen had left to aspire to be an actress, which is more than Elsa ever did. Pure Jealousy.

In the script, she's meant to be the ugly, frumpy sister. So she's jealous that Helen is prettier and is shaping up to have a far better life while she gets stuck in a backwater town with a miserable life and a job that won't amount to all that much.
It loses a lot of its effect when she looks like a supermodel herself, though

She was probably frustrated that Helen got a lot of positive attention and had the guts to pursue her dreams, while she was stuck in their small town having to work in the family business.
