That depends upon how well documented the history is.
As long as she doesn't have any felony convictions, she should be able to buy one. And even if she is a convicted felon, she could probably score a long gun via a private sale. But I stress that I am not advising she do that, assuming she does have a felony record.

In all seriousness, a territorial dog is a great supplement to a firearm; if you are a sound sleeper and you sleep with a firearm within reach, you might very well wake up with an intruder pointing that gun at you. However, a territorial dog will start barking like crazy before the intruder gains full entrance, giving you time to collect your thoughts and have your gun in hand(s) and ready to go.
But a baseball bat?

Buy a firearm. Preferably a handgun. A Glock is a good choice, but if you are a beginner, remember that the 'safety' is not really safe. I don't think you need to consider a hand cannon, a 9mm would be fine, and Glock offers excellent choices in that caliber.
