EDGEWATER, Md. — A disagreement between two high school students ended with one teen intentionally running the other over with a car, Anne Arundel County police said.
County police said they were called around 3 p.m. Friday to a hit-and-run near Fairhill Drive and Londontown Road in Edgewater.
Police said Nicholas Kyle Hoffman, 17, intentionally struck Logan Dandley, 16, who was walking along the road.
Dandley was bandaged up and barely able to walk Monday when he spoke with 11 News.
"He just gunned it around the corner, and after he hit me, he continued to fly down the road, and then he just disappeared," Dandley said. "Next thing I know, I heard some like, tires squealing, coming around the corner, and as they came around the corner, they just stomped on the accelerator and sped up."
Dandley's knee hit the windshield of the car, and skin was ripped off his arm, exposing his tendons. He has a hairline fracture on his femur. He was flown to Shock Trauma.
"I probably had about two seconds just to react," Dandley said. "I just was just able to jump up, and what happened was my knee went through and I just rolled off the top of the car."
Officials said they quickly located the suspect and detained him.
"Our officers arrived very quickly on the scene, found a vehicle matching the description and detained the driver," Anne Arundel County police spokesman Mark Limansky said. "It turns out, after investigating the incident, that this collision appears to be intentional."
Hoffman has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and other related charges. A judge in Glen Burnie ordered Hoffman held without bond.
Dandley said he wonders how what he called a "typical beef between high school boys" left him feeling lucky to be alive.
"If anything, why can't you just like, fight, like one on one? Why can't you just use your hands?" Dandley said. "I know what could have happened to me. If I hadn't known it was their car from the three days prior, they would have taken out the back of my legs, and they would have taken me clean out."
Dandley may be home, but he's in a lot of pain. His mother said she thinks he'll have to miss at least a week of school.
That's a stiff prison sentence. I guess he could've killed the guy though.
