I actually preferred SuperGirl with James to this run of the mill hipster dude CW interpretation of Mon-El. I think they are just stalling them being together. I mean they always stall the main relationships on shows with a side person.

what is bad with Supergirl's James Olsen is that he is strong, confident and what tradition says a handsome guy has to look like.

The Lafayette character on True Blood was(is) black and he stole practically every scene he was in. Same for Gus on Psyche. And I've never seen Idris Elba in any show that he didn't own, regardless of the skin color of the actors around him. I don't think charisma has anything to do with skin color. It's just something a person has or they don't. And an actor with charisma can make even the smallest and poorly written character shine. Now I'm not writing the James actor off solely on the basis of the two roles I've seen him in, but it's not looking good.

I'd say that for the majority of males on the cw. The casting director casts non-threatening Justin Bieber pretty boys. Two episodes ago when Kara confronted James he showed some passion and charisma. However, that conflict appears to have been resolved.

Black characters are usually bland on white television shows: no spark, no charisma, and no influence whatsoever. I haven't watched that many television shows with only one black character who was allowed to truly act, who had backstory, and who was written well. James is the CEO of CATCO and the Guardian, but he's bland. This has to do with what's going on behind the scenes. Tristian Wilds suffered the same fate on the 90210 remake.

I was never interested in the character. I've never seen the actor in anything else so I can't judge his overall acting ability. I imagine that in a different role he could do just fine. However in THIS role, on THIS show, for THIS character he has always come off as completely flat to me. No spark, no charisma. I don't dislike him, I just feel - and have always felt - "meh" about him. He says he doesn't want to be in Superman's or Supergirl's shadow well then he probably needs to not live in the same town as either one of them. Because if you're a non-super-powered vigilante living in the same city as an alien who can shoot lasers out of her/his eyes then, sorry, but you're always going to be in someone's shadow.
ETA: I looked him up and I was wrong. I have seen him in something before: True Blood. He played a character called Eggs and I thought he was boring there too and had no chemistry with the Tara character.

I fell bad for Mehcad. He deserves so much better than being demoted to the least important character of the show.

I can see him dying at the end of this season. He's like the CEO of CATCO and the Guardian, and the writers act like they don't have the talent to do something with that. I think an honorable death would be best for the character at this point.

The producers will be neglecting James as much as possible, and when he gets screen time, it will be done in such a way that will cause you to completely lose interest in the character. He's not getting any backstory, and he's emasculated whenever he's on the screen. He's treated like a recurring character, but I would say he's treated lesser than that, because a recurring character at least has some backstory.
