Dawn of Planet of the Apes had a nice mix of dark and light tones. It took its time to build up to the action, and the already well done and impact action sequences all the more satisfying. I felt like Koba was also a fantastic villain who you could empathise with.
War of the Planet of the Apes is also one of the movies I'm looking forward to most this year.
I could see him being a very good match for the character.

From what I've read, they have a script. I'd like to see what he could do with the property.
Ultimately I'll reserve judgement until after we see who gets signed on.

In theory he could do a good job since he was able to jump into a franchise and elevate it. However the only question is, can he make a quick turn around? Now luckily there won't be motion capture work and they probably have some type of script 😕 prepared rather than having to change courses (like from Rise to Dawn).
