I know, I know, there's always someone claiming that a movie they liked is the greatest, well, now it's my turn!
I've seen this movie 3 times in the theatres and it's been around a month since the first time so it's had lots of time to mellow in my consciousness, this isn't a knee-jerk reaction nor one made after just having left the theatre while emotions or hype is running high, this is a well thought out, legitimate statement;
X-Men Apocalypse
is the best superhero movie I've ever seen.
It was phenomenally entertaining, both in terms of dramatics and spectacle. The acting was fantastic, I was surprised by some of the new cast whom I had doubts about before seeing the movie, but everyone was perfectly cast and nailed their roles. I was not surprised by the returning cast though, they are amongst the very best actors in the business and did not disappoint. Michael Fassbender's scene in the forest was the most emotionally driven and dramatic moment I've ever seen in a comic book movie. It is also the finest acting I've seen in one too.
The action and violence in this movie are the best superpower scenes that I've ever seen in a comic book movie, by miles of open road, it simply blows the competition right out of the water. Some of the scenes here were massive cinematic endeavours and did they ever pay off! The planning of this movie's superpower action scenes must have been incredibly lengthy, there was so much more than just effort that went into this movie, there's such obvious dedication, passion and artistry here. I'm sure Bryan Singer was a big driving force behind that, wanting to go out on his X-Men series with a bang.
It's incredible to me that the music in the movie was so good as well. I don't mean just the classic rock selection, which was infinitely excellent, I mean Ottman's score. The guy is an editor for crying out loud! How does he craft such excellent music? The opening scene drew me right into the movie not only because of it's visual splendour and spectacle but because of that opening score, good grief it was incredible to hear coming out of those enormous theatre speakers.
Lastly the post production work from the editing to the special effects and sound effects were all masterfully done. This movie is paced PERFECTLY. And it's not just the pacing that was managed perfectly either, the characterization was too; every single major character save for Psylocke, and there's a metric ton of them in this, every one of the main characters gets easily definable and understandable characterization and character motivations, all of which entangle and come together neatly in the final act. It was a Herculean feat to pull that off in a movie this long, this big. The story could have easily got bogged down or meander in it's narrative, most movies of this length do, but not so here. The one scene that could be said to be extraneous, Wolverine's berserker rage attack, was excellently placed in the film and still managed to provide foreshadowing for Jean Grey while serving to set-up several story points, move the plot along and reintroduce a fan favourite who is the best character in comic books!
In short, it's the defining masterpiece of the superhero genre. While it's not as realistically dramatized as others (
The Dark Knight
), or as self contained or character intimate as others (
Spider-Man 2
), it perfectly and stylishly melds all the qualities of good film-making and good story-telling into a phenomenal spectacle of imagination. Pure cinematic bliss!

Yeah I'm really looking forward to watching it again (for the 1st time since the theatres) over the Christmas holidays. I'm going to write up character studies for all of the major characters shortly thereafter as they're all well defined and worth taking a look at. I'm also halfway through writing an article on filming techniques throughout the decades and how each of the X-Men movies in the recent trilogy employ the cinematic techniques of the decades they're suppose to take place in, which was a really nice artistic choice and adds another dimension of visual flavour to these already rich films.

Roland Emmerich could NEVER hook people to the story and characters so much that they forget a HUGE spoiler alert like the end of DOFP. Singer showed epic destruction because that's who Apocalypse is. He doesn't care about all the humans he's slaughtering in his schemes. It's made quite clear in the film that Apocalypse does care about all of his "children" / mutant brothers and sisters at least until they defy him.

This is no different than a Roland Emmerich film. From a pure film-making and storytelling perspective it's awful. The fact that you think this is better than The Dark Knight, Civil War, The Winter Soldier, DOFP, X2, Iron Man, GOTG, Watchmenis just wrong
If you like it cause ur a comic fan, ok fine, but from a FILM perspective, not thinking about the source material, all the films above are clearly much better films. Saying it's the best of all time is just being a tad too much of a fanboy

Hey, I like all of the lists given thus far, those are all excellent movies and I'm not arguing against them, I'm saying that this is the best superhero movie that I've ever seen. Personal preference, and it wasn't one that I came to easily, there's a lot of tremendously good superhero movies out there, going all the way back to the 70's
Superman
film. What a soundtrack, it might be John Williams' best and it's hard to see any other actor other than Christopher Reeve in the role, he defined it, for me.
But the jump-starter for the modern superhero era is
X-Men
, and Bryan Singer did a good job bringing it all full circle with a complicated filming involving some of the best actors in the business in
X-Men Apocalypse
. I've had a fun time every time I've seen it, and that's a rarity.

You say that like you haven't been posting for the last month about how much you loved this movie. You're just going overboard now. Too each his own, I suppose.

It is. If there is a masterpiece of the comic book movie genre aside from this film, it's Sam Raimi's
Spider-Man 2
, and I say that as neither a big fan of the director or the character, but as a fan of good story telling and good film-making. I would say that
X-Men Apocalypse
is probably the greater endeavour given the size and scope of the movie, the pacing is absolutely perfect for such a long film, as is the balancing of a huge cast of characters, and it was a hell of a lot of fun! Especially Oscar Isaac's performance.
Spider-Man 2
had it a bit easier with a tighter, smaller cast and story, and was not as ambitious of an enterprise as
X-Men Apocalypse
, but nevertheless it's an exceptionally well written and well directed movie. I would call it near perfect.

with it. I can't wait! It's time for some new great stuff to add to my collection. I'm especially interested in the special features for
X-Men Apocalypse
, I hope they go into detail about how they filmed the Quicksilver mansion sequence, it was an incredible cinematic feat.
I just pulled the DVD for that movie out of a storage space I have in another city, forgot that I owned it and really looking forward to watching it again! It's excellent, my favourite Pixar film.
I think you can count it as a superhero movie yeah, although it wasn't based on a previous comic book (Fantastic Four I suppose, very loosely).

Big fan of
The Dark Knight Rises
eh? I loved that movie too, but I was the only one of the group I went with to really like it, everyone after the movie were complaining about this and that, I think they just failed to get into the spirit of the thing. Like Bane for instance, no one seemed to like him, which I don't get because I thought that Tom Hardy was fantastic! So intimidating and powerful, and like Apocalypse I found him to be quite funny as well, in a over-the-top way which didn't sacrifice the intimidation and suspense for laughs. Great characterization for Bruce Wayne in the movie too, I loved his character arc in it.

The Dark Knight
is excellent and I love that whole series of Batman movies, but you're right in saying that they're not really superhero movies so much as they are crime dramas. They just happen to have a detective that dresses up in a bat suit and kicks the ever loving beep out of people!
What I mean is there aren't any superpowers in those movies, so they're quite a different flavour than most films from that genre.
Seeing
The Dark Knight
for the first time was a mind-blowing experience, I actually shook hands with the guy sitting next to me after the movie! Like we'd been through something together haha, but I found that the movie didn't hold up quite as well in subsequent viewings. Still great, but it couldn't recapture that feeling the first time watching it, and some of the plot contrivances started sticking out like a sore thumb too. Not so with
X-Men Apocalypse
, at least so far it's been just as good each time I've seen it, and I'd love to catch it once more while it's still in theatres.

I think it's my favorite too. TDK is great but IMO it's not really a superhero movie so I have to give it to this one. It really has everything, and I find myself enjoying it more the more times I watch it. That's the sign of a good movie.
If you go into this film with a clear mindset, you will really enjoy yourself. If you are to obsessed with the rights and Disney you won't like it, and if you are too obsessed with getting source material perfect you won't like it. If you take it for what it is, a movie ADAPTATION, then this movie is amazing. It nails some of the characters and everyone, yes even Jennifer Lawrence, gave great performances.
The story is generic, but it's a comic book movie. ALL stories are generic. You can't sit there and knock the Apocalypse story and in the next sentence mention how (x CBM has a great story). It just makes you look stupid and biased. This movie had drama, action and comedy. And they blended it together better then any Disney (too family friendly) or DC(too dark and bleak) comic book movie.
Excellent movie, will see it again.
