I find it rather bizarre people clapping, screaming, talking to the characters in the screen, booing, shouting, etc.
None of that happens here. If that happened, the rest of the audience would complain and the person doing it would be asked to leave.
What is it like in your country?

You're wasting your time, they've brought this up before and exaggerate the US reactions. the concept of going to a movie and having fun is about as alien to them as the concept of silently filing in, sitting down, silently watching the film, then silently filing out lest the stormtroopers drag you out and imagining you had a good time at the movies is to me..

I get the ovation if the film makers are there in the audience, it's a sign of appreciation and respect.

Well, I can't and won't speak for audiences in my country as a whole, since I usually only ever go to one specific cinema. But yes, I did encounter several instances of parts of the audience reacting to a movie with cheers and ovation towards the end of the screening.
I'd interpret that as a way of paying respects to the filmmakers, absent as they are. A gesture of sorts, though rationally looked at obviously a pointless one. Also it's an act of showing appreciation for a good experience among the audience itself.

Clapping at a screen, standing ovations and the like does not happen is any showing I have ever been too. You would be laughed at if you clapped at the screen in my country. Shouting, booing and the such would result in you being escorted of the premises. Talking to the characters on the screen would probably result in you leaving in a straight jacket. Laughing is permitted but if you even talk to the person your with you are likely to be hushed by other audience members.
These standing ovations and dancing to DC soundtracks that CaptainBatman claims to have experienced wont ever happen here but as we all know CaptainBatman is totally unbiased so he would never ever lie.
To make a great film you need three things - the script, the script and the script -Alfred Hitchcock

America is the only country where that is deemed acceptable.
