LOGAN is screening out of competition, just like XMEN:THE LAST STAND did at Cannes.

What are you talking about? Of course a ton of people will see this. Its Jackmans last X-Men movie, thats means alot. Look at Fast and Furious 7. It was the highest grossing part, in the franchise, since it was Paul Walkers last movie. And the same will happen with Logan.

There's no true guarantee that a ton of people will see this movie. The X-Men franchise has always had an uneven track record at the box office.
I think itll do well so long as the reviews are strong, but some might argue that the tone, the R-rating, and the lack of "Wolverine" in the title are drawbacks.

On the contrary, I'm looking forward to the movie, and I will actually be among the first to see it. My point is, a premiere in Berlin is not that big a deal, having attended the festival since 2012. They always have 2-3 big releases screening out of competition because they need a title that will get the press's attention, and it's usually movies that are coming out in February-March. The main incentive for Fox, since they already know people will see the movie regardless, is that having it in Berlin means they don't need to spend extra money on sending the cast and crew all over Europe. If the movie gets good reviews it's a bonus.

You seem really eager to make an argument against this movie. They seem pretty confident in this movie from everything we've seen so far. That was the point I was making.

fgadmin

Reply to World Premiere at the BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL on Mon, 13 Apr 2026 23:36:30 GMT

Max_cinefilo89 — 9 years ago(January 14, 2017 10:50 AM)

The Berlinale selection committee doesn't even need to have seen the movie, they need a couple of high-profile titles for media coverage purposes, and Logan fits the bill (alongside Trainspotting 2). Fox is happy to send the movie to Berlin because it saves them money on the international press tour.

But I can't imagine they'd do that if they thought the film was bad.
Besides, they screened 40 minutes of the movie at the BNAT, and the reactions seemed to be nothing short of positive. Bottom line, Fox definitely doesn't seem to be trying to hide this film like they did with
Fant4stic.

Plus, Logan premiering at the Berlinale means nothing in terms of the film's quality or awards chances.

Between this and the surprising amount of awards buzz that
Deadpool
has been receiving, it seems like the X-Men franchise is really starting to break out with these R-rated films.
Say what you will about Fox as a studio, but there has yet to be an MCU film that has been in serious consideration for this stuff.

I am attending the festival (booked my train ticket to Berlin yesterday). The Competition (which includes select out-of-competition titles, as far as the premiere screening venue is concerned) and Berlinale Special section (which is essentially an extension of the out-of-competition line-up, but playing in different theaters) receive roughly equal media attention, with more high-profile titles receiving exponentially more coverage.
And yes, it's highly likely Fox is betting on early positive word of mouth, especially from audiences (most films at the festival are shown 3-4 times, excluding the press/market screenings).

Thanks for the info. Are the chances then of a more assured favorable reception ( assuming the movie is very good) higher? What about media coverage would they give equal attention to films shown for the competition part and to those screening out of competition?
Are you attending the festival this year? Please share your reactions, if you are planning to do so.

As someone who's attended the festival since 2012, the bolded part is BS. Berlin has a large chunk of mainstream, audience-friendly stuff playing each year, especially out of competition (where Logan is screening).

The big surprise is the World Premiere of Logan, Hugh Jackmans probably no longer last turn as Wolverine. Superhero movies rarely get film festival bows, less so somewhere
like Berlin, which usually leans very heavily arthouse, so this is pretty notable.
And it certainly shows that 20th Century Fox has big confidence in James Mangolds R-rated vision for the hero.
