Funny, I thought the Dredd sequel was still going ahead. Pity if it's not, Urban seems to genuinely like the character, he even appeared on a documentary about 2000AD a while back. It might go back to the cult/niche appeal of the Judge Dredd character, I thought he was well known in the UK at least, or maybe nowadays people really are hung up on brand recognition from the big two. At least Deadpool had a link to X Men before word of mouth made it such a success.
There are a few 2000AD strips that could make cool cbms. Going from memory, several of the strips actually took place in the same universe, albeit decades or centuries apart, so in theory they could do a crossover movie using time travel or dimension jumps. (I haven't read 2000 since the 90s, but I think there was a story where Dredd met Johnny Alpha (Strontium Dog has great visual potential, but perhaps people would get the whole mutant angle confused with X Men), and there was another story that tied Judge Dredd with the Flesh series, as well as ABC Warriors.) (They did use Hammerstein, kind of, in the Stallone Dredd movie.)

The worst part is that there are other means of distribution, Netflix or Amazon. It's a great movie, and everyone who has seen it loves it (unless they saw The Raid first.then they call it a rip off..and that's not true they were in production at the same time).
I don't know what has to happen to make it happen, I mean the movie only cost them roughly 40 million, which is less than Deadpool, is the fanbase smaller than we think? Idk.

Variety and quality are important. But idk man, take Valerian for example, it looks like Besson is back on track and will be really good (or at least better than Lucy) but it's gonna flop. Mad Max Fury Road was great and word of mouth barely saved it, same with edge of tomorrow, and we lost a Dredd 2 because no one watched the amazing Dredd 1 despite the heavy buzz and fans still begging.
If you're going with an unknown property then you need a fantastic marketing team and a good film.but even then, and it's that "even then" that scares studios, especially small studios.

To answer your question earlier, as far as I'm aware, there is no Russian comic book that it's based on, but having done some digging around online, apparently they do have their own comic book industry over there and they have a few other previous superhero movies. (Some movie about a guy with a flying car and another one about psychic teens, don't know if they're based on existing comics or books).

I quite like the genre, and it still has lots of potential, but I'd rather see other cbms in addition to Marvel and DC, just because I'm getting a bit sick of the box office contest between the big two, and IMO it's holding both companies back a bit (less so with the tv related comic book properties). Much as I'm looking forward to WW and JLA, maybe the new Thor, I'm equally interested in non Marvel/DC fare like Ghost in the Shell and beep aka Guardians (the upcoming Russian superhero movie). It's still kind of surprising more independent studios haven't tried doing their own original cbm type movies, but then again, maybe because most cbms are high budget and aim to be high profit tentpole movies, it's put off some of the smaller studios. I'd like to see more Robocops and Crows (not literally those two characters) in addition to the big brand heroes.

Well when compared to the number of films released in an entire year, 8 isn't much (let's say 10 if we include Fox) but the amount of marketing.that..that will be excessive and will become overwhelming and may begin to wear on people. That's almost one a month, having Thor3 and JL in the same month? Woof.
This year we had 6 comic book films, two from each studio, and some films financial suffered, like Xmen, while it wasn't the best film it was trampled over and forgotten because Cap3 had just been released two week prior. funneling more money into these massive blockbusters may mean less variety, or simply the public will have to be even more selective in their films which may lead to (again) variety to suffer.

If they're all spread out during the year then no. I don't think WB/DC is in the position to grant four tentpole productions a $200M budget these days though.

Well if both companies did it we'd get 8 superhero movies a year which might be a bit much for GAs (although personally, if they're good/enjoyable I wouldn't mind).

As long as they're different enough, and spread out through the year, it shouldn't be a problem. However, it's unlikely to happen anytime soon.
