My thinking is that Fox only needs the "X-Men" title to keep the rights.
Fox only needs to keep the X-Men characters active in films to keep the rights where it belongs. The place is not called Disney.

Assassin's Greed is a video game. Video Games have a long track record of failure.
X-Men already has 3 completed trilogies and a 4th one with Deadpool that should be completed in 2020. How many video games movies have gotten sequels?

No point in a YA movie, if that YA movie is going to be set in the 90s. That demographic is going to want something the can relate to.

They'll retrofit it into an X-Men movie. Similar to how First Class was originally supposed to be an Origins Magneto film.
I bet if they knew Deadpool was going to be as successful as it was, they probably would have titled it Deadpool: An X-Men Story.
