That was a bit of time ago, but I believe what happened was the writers were trying to make her more like Pre-Doomsday Coma Superman after 1986's Crisis on Infinite Earth reboot.
It was only after Superman was beat into a coma and emerged that he realized he didn't need to breath in space, and was only limiting himself because he thought he needed to do so.
So, either that's how Kara is going to be done here, or I have to have Doomsday scare the writers.
