It's baffling. I'm as disappointed as the next person. From it's music placement to it's poor character development to it's drastic shifts in tone, this could have been like DC comics version of The Dirty Dozen. Aside from 2-3 characters, most of the rest of the cast are given little to do or say. The action set pieces lack any kind of variety or creativity and they would matter more if we knew the objective or what was at stake. It would have been nice for not only the Squad to know, but also the viewer to know that the building they were entering was the one Waller was in so we knew what the stakes were. Instead it's handled as some sort of twist. Exposition is repeated twice in the case scenario we missed it before("Her heart has been removed. We can kill her now." Thanks for the reminder). Then it tries to tug at the heart things with El Diablo saying he won't lose another family in a moment that never feels close to being earned.
Ayer should have figured out a better storyline first and then pick suitable squad members for that mission. Instead we get a pretty generic end of the world threat that Amanda Waller accidentally started herself.

I heard rumors that the film was more of a black comedy, meaning it had darker, more snarky humor. It wasn't until BvS recieved so much criticism for it's bleak tone that the studio rushed around trying to do damage control.

Oh definitely. 6 weeks was not enough for Ayer. Studio interference doesn't help. I'm assuming the film initially had more of a dark tone that we saw in the first trailer and getting the company who made the second trailer to cut the actual film.yeanot good. Ayer's films sometimes have humor to break the tension, but I would hardly consider him a funny writer and that's on WB for relying on him to do something that isn't his expertise.

Keep in mind, Ayer had six weeks to write a script for a genre he had no experience in. And when the studio decided "hey, it's not GOTG-enough" they re-shot several scenes to add more action and more goofy humor and handed the editing job to a trailer company.
